The son of artistic parents, the impulse to create goes back as early as I can remember–my dad kept me well-supplied with pencils, pens and paper to pass the time drawing. Somewhere in a box in his attic hides a folder of my best artwork, among them meticulously detailed drawings of my parents and siblings, which they patiently sat hours for. I’ve been making images of people ever since.

I find human faces, gestures, cultures, creations and, sometimes, their utter absence engrossing. Portraiture allows me to meet new and fascinating people, share their stories, ideas, aspirations, and make pictures that convey their essence yet are also revelatory. My portrait icons–Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Diane Arbus, Mark Seliger, Walter Iooss, Jr., Irving Penn, Norman Jean Roy, Sally Mann, Platon, Antonin Kratochvil, Yousuf Karsh, Nadav Kander–betray my desire to embrace diverse styles as appropriate per subject and concept.
